International Alphonse

Hasselmans Harp Competition

Alphonse Hasselmans (1845–1912) was among the most influential figures in the evolution of modern harp performance. Born in Belgium and active throughout much of his career in France, he earned an international reputation as a performer, teacher, and advocate for the harp as a concert instrument.

As Professor of Harp at the Paris Conservatoire for nearly three decades, he guided a remarkable generation of musicians whose achievements helped establish the French harp tradition as a leading force in the musical world. His artistic vision, refined technique, and dedication to excellence continue to inspire harpists today.

In addition to his pedagogical legacy, Hasselmans enriched the harp repertoire through his own compositions, many of which remain valued by performers and students alike. His contribution to the development of harp artistry secured his place as one of the defining musical figures of his era.
